Millipedes

 |
Identification:
Millipedes range from 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches in length and tend to coil up when
resting or dead. They resemble a small earthworm, but have two pairs
of legs on each segment of their body.
|
 |
Habitat: Millipedes
live in moist or damp organic material such as decaying leaves or mulch
close to homes. they are usually seen at ground level or in basements
and die after entering the home due to desiccation (drying out).
|
 |
Food:
Millipedes
feed on damp organic matter such as decaying plant matter (leaves, wood,
mulch etc.) and sometimes on living roots.
|
 |
Life Cycle:
Millipedes
lay their eggs in masses in the soil and take 2 years to reach maturity,
molting several times in the process and can live for several years.
|
 |
Control: **A
thorough saturation of the soil around the home is necessary to reach the
areas where millipedes live and breed. This should be done in a 4 to
10 foot band around the entire home and requires an extensive amount of
materials and time.
|
**Since millipedes live and breed in organic matter, it may be necessary
to remove plants, mulch, leaves, etc. to achieve total control of these
pests!
